My name is Daphne. I’m 43, live in Singapore, and I cycled around the coast of Taiwan by myself over 7 days in January 2016.
I promised myself that if I came home alive, I would pay it forward by setting up a website to let others know that it is possible for a girl to go it solo, and how.
I’m not one of those brave women who cycle around the world on their own for months and years, camping and toughing it out in all sorts of conditions. What I’ve done is nothing compared to them. I’m a normal namby-pamby urbanite who needs a hot shower and clean bed at night.
So this website is for people like me – seeking a bit of adventure but not too much, willing to take some risks but within limits, wanting to be alone but not for too long.
And I know that there are people like me out there. When I announced this trip, so many friends messaged me saying they were inspired to go after their own dreams. So many already have, but perhaps have not shared their stories with us.
This was one of the scariest things I’d ever done. I was inspired by the stories of others. Reading about those who had done it before gave me courage. I hope that adding another voice to the crowd will give heart to those who need it. And I ask that when you chase and catch your dream as I did, that you too will tell your story to the world.
You may tell a tale that takes up residence in someone’s soul, becomes their blood and self and purpose. That tale will move them and drive them and who knows what they might do because of it, because of your words. That is your role, your gift.
